In this article, we will take a nostalgic look back at some of the best 90's alternative music and explore why it makes for perfect walkup songs in the game of baseball.

Baseball Walk Up Songs: What Are They?

Baseball walk up songs are a staple in today's game and are an integral part of the pre-game routine for many players. A walkup song is a piece of music played as a player steps up to the plate to bat. The music is chosen by the player and serves as a form of self-expression, as well as a way to get into the zone and prepare for the game.

The history of walkup songs in baseball dates back to the late 1980s and early 1990s when players started using music to get pumped up and focused before taking their turn at bat. Over time, walkup songs have become an increasingly popular part of the game so many players are choosing songs that are meaningful to them, or that reflect their personality and playing style.

So without further ado, here is our list of the top baseball walk up songs using music from the 90's.

1. Foo Fighters - My Hero

The top spot in our list of the best walk-up songs for baseball belongs to the Foo Fighters. Released in 1997 as the third single from their second studio album "The Colour and the Shape," the song features a melodic and driving guitar riff and a powerful vocal performance from frontman Dave Grohl. My Hero is an anthem about ordinary people who are heroes in their own right, and it pays homage to the everyday heroes who inspire us in our own lives. There's no need to cue the song at a specific spot, so the beginning is perfect for your Walk Up. If you don't like the instrumental-only portion of the song, the chorus also makes a great alternative.

5. Beastie Boys - So What'Cha Want

I'm not a huge Beastie Boys guy but "What'Cha Want" is a high-energy track that can make for a perfect walk up. The song is a blend of hip-hop, punk rock, and funk, with a catchy, upbeat beat and a catchy chorus that's sure to bring some energy to your at-bat. It's the perfect choice for a player who wants to make a bold and confident entrance onto the field.

6. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away Now

While the lyrics are probably a bit inappropriate for a family atmosphere, the very beginning of the song before Anthony Kiedis starts singing would be a fun entrance song. If you want some vocals as part of your walk-up, wait until the chorus kicks in and use the "give it away now" part. This could be a play on the pitcher giving away a home run shot.

7. Korn - Blind

Whether you're looking for an adrenaline boost or just need to let out some frustration, "Blind" is a great choice for a pre-game pump-up and definitely belongs in the top 10 best walk up songs for baseball. My only concern is the beginning takes a long time to develop so you'd need to find the perfect spot to cue it up. Maybe when Jonathan Davis says, "Are You Ready."

Let's hope it doesn't incite a massive riot at the ballpark as it did at Woodstock 99. Similar to "welcome to paradise," the lyrics of Smashing Pumpkin's "today" are so fitting for the baseball field. "Today is the greatest, day I've ever known." What's better than playing ball with your buddies? It really doesn't get any better than that.

Other Smashing Pumpkins options - Zero, specifically where Billy Corgan says, "wanna go for a ride" and Cherub Rock.

16. Metallica - Fuel

Any Metallica song would make a great walk up but I really love the beginning of Fuel. You only get to play a few seconds of the song as you make your way to the plate and "Fuel" packs so much energy into such a small window right from the beginning of the song.

17. Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot

This song develops very slowly but the lyrics work for the game of baseball. Hey Man, Nice Shot is such a perfect reference for a homerun ball.

20 . Marilyn Manson

You can't get through a 90s alternative rock list without including Marilyn Manson. While I didn't run in the same crowd as Manson fans, denying how catchy some of his songs were was hard. "Sweet Dreams" or "Beautiful People" both have great guitar riffs or lyrics that could work well for your song. Again, make sure to use one of the clean versions.

21. Sugar Ray - Fly

The decade wasn't always about angry white guys doing rap rock. Sugar Ray's "Fly" was popular in the 90s for its catchy melody, upbeat lyrics, and memorable chorus. The song was released in 1997 as the lead single from their album "Floored" and quickly blew up. Overall, "Fly" was a hit that embodied the fun-loving spirit of the 90s and would definitely make a great walk up song for baseball. Who doesn't want their baseball to fly out of the park?

21. Alice In Chains - Man In The Box

How fitting, as you are literally a man in the batter's box. Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box" is an intense track that would make for an excellent addition to any hype walk-up songs list. The lyrics about feeling trapped and wanting to break free perfectly capture the batter's experience in the box, waiting for the pitch to come.

21. Tool - Sober

I wasn't a huge Tool fan while growing up in the 90s but have a much better appreciation for their music after being reintroduced to their songs on Sirius XM's Lithium channel. While the lyrics aren't the best for a walkup song, you can't deny that the beginning of the song "Sober" wouldn't give you chills as you make your way to the plate. Something about the song just creates a level of seriousness that will intimidate any pitcher. If you fast forward to 2001, Tool's "Schism" would make another great song for your at-bat.

22. Incubus - Nice To Know You

With its powerful energy and positive message, "Nice to know you" is a perfect anthem for anyone looking to make a change and take on the world (or a really good pitcher).

23. Stone Temple Pilots - Down

I got to the end of my list and realized I hadn't included any Stone Temple Pilots songs. What a mistake that would've been. Once I realized what I had done, it was so easy to pick the perfect STP song for a baseball walk up. "Down" is the obvious choice and once you hear the instrumentals in the beginning, you will understand why.

24. Pearl Jam - Do The Evolution

Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all time so I couldn't leave them off this list. While most of their songs wouldn't work as walk-ups, Do The Evolution has a catchy hook and excellent guitar riffs that can raise the excitement level at the ballpark.

25. Soundgarden - Rusty Cage

Soungarden falls into the same category as Pearl Jam. While I love their music, most of their songs aren't great fits for this type of list and wouldn't necessarily hype anyone up. However, the beginning instrumentals of "Rusty Cage" are fantastic and could absolutely work. The only people that would recognize the song though are the older folks in the stands. It's worth it though.

How Do I Choose A Walk Up Song?

When choosing a walk-up song, the first step is to consider the type of music that gets you pumped up and in the zone. It could be something with a fast beat and high energy, or something with a slow, deliberate tempo that helps you focus. It could also be something funny that loosens you up a little bit. Whatever type of music you choose, it should get you excited and in the right mindset for your at-bat.

It's also important to consider the lyrics of the song you choose. Some players prefer to choose a song with lyrics that reflect their personality or outlook, while others prefer instrumental music that doesn't distract from their focus. If you do choose a song with lyrics, make sure they don't contain any profanity or offensive language.

Finally, consider the length of the song. You may have 5-10 to play your walkup song so be sure to pick something that makes sense. A song with a slow building intro won't give you a enough time to get to the part that will hype you up unless you cue it up in the perfect spot.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the 90s alternative music scene marked a pivotal moment in rock and roll history. With a unique sound and style that combined elements of punk, metal, and alternative rock, this era produced some of the most iconic rock songs of all time. This is why many of these 90s alternative songs are still popular today and make for great baseball walk up songs. They embody a raw, rebellious spirit that perfectly captures the energy and excitement of the game. Whether it's the driving beats of Limp Bizkit's "Rollin" or the chorus of Sugar Ray's "Fly," these 90s rock anthems are sure to get players and fans pumped up and ready to play.
